One freakishly stormy night, when wind was howling madly outside, tree branches scrapped hoarsely against the window panes, crackling thunder and blinding flashes of lightning, in a peaceful neighbourhood, in a lovely house, there stayed a lovely family of roaches.
Ah pa roach: Aiya! How to go out hunt for food now. So scary leh!
Roachlets: Aiya! Ah pa! Nevermind la! You just stay at home and tell us a scary bedtime story, lo!
Ah pa roach: Ha? You all want scary bedtime story? Ah ok la! You all sure ha! Ready?
Roachlets: READY!
And the story telling began.....
Ah pa: It was a year ago when this happened. During a dark, stormy night, you ah pa went out into the kitchen to look for food for your pregnant ah ma. Into the vast, wide and open kitchen. Very big, lo, the kitchen ah pa tell you. It's a thousand measurement if use ah pa's feelers!
Kids: WHOA!!!!!! *extremely amazed!* SO BIG!!
Ah pa: Ya! Ok. Continue. So, ah pa was in the kitchen, la. Looking for food. It was really really late hours at night. When all the neighbourhoods were peacefully quiet. Lights were off and everyone was happily sleeping cosily in their own bed. So, ah pa thought ah pa's food hunt will go smoothly. The food storage was near. Ah pa can smell it already. Ah pa thought to myself, if ah pa bring home the food, your ah ma will be very very happy for sure, one! So, ah pa went nearer to the food. But! Little did ah pa know what came creeping behind ah pa. Little did ah pa know that there was a particular human whom did not sleep. Little did ah pa know that the human will come into the kitchen looking for food!
Kids: *in full suspense mode*
Ah pa: The human! Chose to keep the lights off! Did not on the light, lo! Slowly, slowly and without a single sound of footsteps, the beast came walking nearer to ah pa. Ah pa was caught unaware! And the gigantic foot came down, just like that, directly onto ah pa's head! *with actions and movement of foot stomping on the ground*
Kids: *screams and squeals* Oh My Gawd, ah pa!!! What happened then???
Ah pa: Ah pa thought ah pa died on the spot and can not come home to see your ah ma and all of you already, lo. Then, as though ah pa's prayers were heard! The foot went up and with a weak breath, ah pa made an attempt to run. The human went crazy, lo, because it did not get to kill off your ah pa. It went off screaming and stomping the ground and up the stairs. Ah pa was so terrified. Ah pa hid underneath the fridge straight away.
Kids: *sighs of reliefs* And then, leh? And then, leh?
Ah pa: And then. Ah pa waited a few minutes to regain ah pa's strength. Then, ah pa set out to go home straight. But thank goodness ah pa waited a while, lo. Because the human went and brought it's army! They tried to search for ah pa. But your ah pa is just too smart for them. Your ah pa had a strategic plan. So ah pa hid out of sight. And then true enough, lo! The humans went off because they can not find ah pa so they gave up. They off the lights and ah pa ran home. And here ah pa is now. Happy and alive with all of you. The end. Now go to sleep lo.
Kids: *hugged ah pa* Ah pa! You are our idol! You are so geng, lo! We are going to tell our friends in school what happen. Humph! Show them whose ah pa is the best! Good night ah pa!
And ah pa switched the light off of their bedroom and he left to the living room. Thinking back of that near-to-death experience. Thinking how lucky he was to be alive when he could have died being stepped on like his brother who lived in the same area. He closed his eyes and silently pray a short prayer feeling thankful.
